Alpha characters, also known as alphanumeric characters, are designed for computers and consist of 26 alphabetic characters and 10 Arabic numerals. Alpha characters include letter variants for languages besides English.
Typically, the purpose of an alphabetic character determines its parameters. Alpha characters are strictly limited to letters and numbers when naming files. However, in programming, symbols are typically allowed as alpha characters. Depending on the application, various subsets of alpha characters may have been adopted to prevent human misinterpretation. Aircraft seat maps are one example of this. The letter “I” is omitted to avoid confusion with the numeral “1.”
