Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, a musician, died in 1997 from a combination of respiratory and heart problems. The then-38-year-health old’s issues were undoubtedly exacerbated by his extreme obesity.
When he was admitted to Queen’s Medical Center for the final time in late June 1997, the Hawaiian had already undergone multiple hospitalizations. He had struggled with weight difficulties for the most of his life, which contributed to a number of health issues, including the respiratory and cardiac issues that ultimately claimed his life. Kamakawiwo’ole died on June 26 in the early morning hours.
In Hawaii and abroad, the musician’s voice and ukulele playing skills garnered him acclaim. His music often reflected his Hawaiian ancestry, and he received numerous awards for it. When he was hospitalised in 1997, he was supposed to receive an award. An estimated 10,000 people attended the funeral, which took place on July 2, 1997.
