In literature, the author’s choice of detail refers to the details revealed for the goal of enhancing the desired prevailing impression. These details were chosen based on what they reveal about the person, place, or thing being described to the reader.

The reader can only see what the writer chooses to expose in the written form, therefore any facts the writer gives may have inherent relevance. Extraneous remarks or descriptions divert attention away from key facts, diluting the author’s intended impact.
