A board foot is a measurement of the volume of lumber contained in a 1 inch by 1 foot by 1 foot board. If the wood being measured is cut into 1-inch thick boards, one board foot equals one square foot.
A board foot is a volume measurement, although wood isn’t usually 1 inch thick. A 2-square-foot board that is 2 inches thick, for example, equals 4 board feet. The volume in board feet is divided by the thickness in inches to compute the amount of square feet a board will cover depending on the board feet.
